Taking a partner or friend to your race: a weekend for both of you

To travel to a race with a companion, agree where they will watch and where you will meet, share the room and the transfer, and give them a plan for the hours you are on the course. With a little planning, race weekend becomes a trip you share rather than hours of waiting at the barrier.

How to make race weekend work for the person not racing

On race day the athlete vanishes for hours: Spartan asks you to arrive 90 minutes before your start time, and then there is the course itself. Without a plan, that is a long stretch for whoever came along.

Talk it through beforehand: when you start, where they can see you, and where you meet afterwards. The finish area gets crowded and your phone will most likely be in your bag, so agree on a specific meeting point.

Where can your companion watch you race?

Each format looks different from the outside:

  • Spartan: the course runs cross-country through woods and rough ground, so not all of it is visible. The finish and the festival area are the safe bet; check the course map ahead of time for a nearby spot to catch you on the way.
  • DEKA: usually held in covered venues, so the weather matters less for whoever is waiting, and following you through the zones is easier.
  • Either way: bring water and a snack for the person waiting, and something warm for the finish, which is for you too.

Can your companion race too?

You do not have to do the same event. DEKA has team versions, DEKA FIT Teams and DEKA MILE Teams, where you race with a partner and share the work of each zone: a good way to try it together for the first time.

At a Spartan, if one of you is going for the Beast and the other wants something shorter, the Sprint is 5 km with 20 obstacles. On Trifecta weekends you can spread races across Saturday and Sunday.

Sharing the room, the transfer and the logistics

Going together keeps things simple: one room, one trip, one booking. With the transfer from the airport or train station to the hotel and the venue, nobody has to drive after the race or hunt for parking that morning.

Before leaving the hotel, go through the bag together: ID, a towel and dry clothes for afterwards. The companion usually ends up holding it, so they may as well know what is inside.

Travelling with a companion FAQ

  • Does my companion have to race?

[Confirm whether the companion offer requires an entry.]

  • Do we share a room?

Yes. Your companion shares your room at the Total pack hotel, close to the start, so you travel, sleep and get ready for race day together. It also keeps the logistics simple: one room, one trip and one booking for both of you.

  • Is it available at every race?

At Santa Susanna, the companion offer is only available when booking the Total pack for two people, with a shared room and the same Pulse services for your companion. [Confirm other races.]

  • Is there a companion discount?

    [Confirm discount amount.]

  • Can we race together?

At DEKA, yes, with the team versions, DEKA FIT Teams and DEKA MILE Teams, where you race as a pair and split the work of each zone. At a Spartan you can each pick your own format, for example a Beast for one of you and a 5 km Sprint for the other.
